Let's try to keep the width of postings down

Guys, recently there have been a lot of postings in various threads that make the page width go totally out of whack. I'm running a 1152 pixels wide screen, and still have to scroll sideways back and forth to be able to read every line. There are two causes for this, both easily amendable, and three cures, which would take care of this problem:

1. Pictures are to wide. I think Bill Jones (Silwerwing) once, not too long ago, made an heroic attempt to make us all stick to a max picture width of 600 pixels. Let's all do that!

2. URLs (links) supplied to various interesting sites are too long. Since they don't break up, the page width goes out of whack. Instead of just pasting in those overly long URLs go the extra mile and use this formula:

Some text like "Here's the link"

3. If you write a reply in a topic which inadvertently has become too wide (it will of course continue to happen), go another extra mile and make manual line breaks in your own text. I find that a line break after slightly less than one and a half of the lines in the "Post a reply" window will make the text come out at around 600 pixels, which will make it readable even if somebody else has posted a too wide entry. (Might vary with computers and fonts used, of course, so find your own guide-line.)

This will make it so much more fun to read all the good stuff appearing on the site.

PS. I ran a simple test and found that a picture of 600 pixels is indeed the maximum width which will fit into the attachment window without making the page any wider than its minimum width, so Bill's original recommendation certainly stands!

Bottom line:
+ No images wider than 600 pixels.
+ Avoid pasting in extremely long links
+ In such cases use the text formula instead

I use that BBCode URL/link technique you described whenever possible. I use the HTML equivalent in the message boards that use HTML. I generally just use the auto line break function when typing posts. If, during a preview of the post, the words for some reason go off of the right hand side I put in manual line breaks. Sometimes it slips by, though. My biggest problem is that my keyboard does not know how to spell sometimes. :P

My screen resolution is set at 1024 x 768 and have noticed quite a few of the postings on this site run off the right hand side. It would be nice if the photos and/or words would not require sideways scrolling.

It might take a while, but the folks of this forum all seem to be down to earth and reasonable people and will eventually remember to edit their posts to fit better.

I too have been getting a headache from having to scroll back and forth to read the posts. I make every effort to making things fit nicely.

Re: smaller URLs, if others don't want to use your method, there is a site out there that make these ultra long URLs small. You can find it at :
www.tinyurl.com . It works great. There's another forum I read all the time and we've gone to this way of giving websites, and there have been no problems. Just a thought.

I think I'm guilty of the latest infractoin, but the issue was that I linked to an image that was very wide, I cant seem to control the width and height paramameters. is it possible to do it here, aka, in html I would of put :

<img src="xxx" height="800" width="600"> but here I only have
the [img] buttons without any attributes.

As dear Leif Oh asked me, so I will show how to make a thumbnail of photo.

Well it is rather complex, but for this reason I use special site for posting images - www.imageshack.us . This site already gives thumbnail for your uploaded photo

The main idea is this code:

If You want to post thumbnail You will need both thumbnail and photo online. This is why I use www.imageshack.us

I have registred at www.imageshack.us. Log-in is a bit tricky, because You need to go to You email and press the link in You imageshack confiramtion letter in order to log in.

Then You can access You gallery, where all pictures are hosted.

If You host pictures, when You're not logged in, it will be very hard to access them in the future. So registration is needed, because of Image Gallery.

Also in gallery besides pictures you can find a special code for forums, web sites, direct and etc.

So You copy a code called "For forum with thumbnail" and paste in you message. Then others will see thumbnail.

One of these days, I'll be sure to test your very good and clear manual of a complicated but superior method for posting images in an elegant and courteous way, allowing for quick loading of pages, with an option to view really large originals of your own choice.
