Yeah usually I ignore trolls as well and most of the time just avoid the situation as well but when you hit home like that it becomes personal especially when you have the GALL to announce intent to pirate for profit the works of others which have been given freely to all.

The fact that someone can be so petty as to charge a child for printing a model and think he is giving is only a sign that his mentality is serious flawed or bent.

I can post line after line of sweet internet-like insults, burns and pictures to describe what I think of him but it's a waste of my time beyond what I have already typed.

The icing on the cake would be a 'banned' logo near his sorry-ass name.

The fallout from all this is that I am going to have to put a page of text relating to IP and Copyright on everything I decide to release from here on out.

I agree that this troll was hard to ignore - I certainly couldn't!. When you tell artists/designers/musicians/authors/other content creators that you think you have a right to re-distribute their work without their permission - and charge for it! - that's like jamming a smoking stick into a wasp's nest.

I'm sure he's still loosing sleep fuming over this, still trying to rid his mind of that terrible thorn that he was painfully and publicly wrong.

SUGGESTION:
How about some of the more legally-inclined posters here put their heads together and write a standard statement that could be used as a model or template by card designers? There are plenty of models to base such a statement on, maybe we need one tuned a little to suit card models.

That would be great for designers whose expertise revolves more closely around creasing cardstock than drafting legal statements (which I expect would probably be most designers )

I humbly offer my EULA as a starting point.

Tim,

I love your response to our troll friend! Reminds me of a thread I followed some years back when someone responded to the "Nigerian scam" post. It was great, he made outrageous statements, and the Nigerians kept urging him for his bank details. Eventually, he got them to assure him that Big Bird lived in Nigeria for him to bird spot when he went over to collect the money! This is pobably the best way to respond to a troll, as no one gets upset and we can all have a good laugh at his/her/its(?) expense!

Very true, Andreas!
I have learned a few things from this experience myself.
While I kept getting angry at his every post, I finally realized that that was his objective.
After that, it didn't work any more.
I must admit that there were times that I wished I could reach through the screen and strangle this guy.
Now, it is more fun to just laugh at him and his ignorance!

Nezard, I agree with your comment, but they usually register and post once, this guy or gal posted 7 times. He sure tried hard to get his point across, look's like he/she has gone quiet now though.

That is a very comprehensive statement. Is there bychance a lawyer in the house who would care to review it and comment?

Looks like it could be a useful template for other designers. Kudos and thanks to SteveM for offering to share it.

Default A different kind of EULA

I was looking at this thread and the Cl Page Ranking 91 (http://www.cardmodels.net/forum/showthread.php?t=9185) from our friends at the Kartonmodell Forum and something went "click." On their page and on the train model they have a simple statement that make the copyright and distribution issues very clear. Perhaps something similar could be used "locally".

I translate freely:

Modell design:
Albrecht Pirling (copyright 2004 all right reserved)

Page Design:
Thomas Pleiner (copyright 2007 all rights reserved)

For all the downloadable models from Kartonmodell-Forum the following terms of use apply:

Download: As often as you like
Printing: As many as you like
Backup copy: 1
Distrubute: No
Link to from outside: No
Commercial use: No
Stored on other servers: No
Sale: No
distributed on third party CD/DVD: No

Any use not mentioned or disallowed above requires the written permission of the copyright holders. Expressly forbidden is the (um) extraction and subsequent distribution of the data in this kit. Violators will be prosecuted.

----------
It would probably have to be translated to legalese, but as layed out, even my 8 year-old could understand it, and have the patients to read it!
