Default R.I.P. SDK Designs

So much for my own designs. The last year and a half's work, gone in my first major computer failure. The drive that failed was the backup for my old "junk" machine, which, ironically, still works! Unfortunately, there's no backup for anything I've done since I bought the newer one. Figures, I just counted all of the various projects I had underway an hour or so before the failure, and there were 72 of them! Well, I still have a few left on the old machine, but all recent work is gone.

I feel for you, brother. Murphy's Law always kicks in at the worst possible moment. I'm glad you still have some work on your older computer. Is anything recoverable at all?

I took the drive to a local computer "repair" shop earlier today. The guy didn't seem to want to attempt anything, but agreed to keep the drive to run a diagnostic on it (for $35.00!). While at work tonight, I called my answering machine and got a message stating that he was unable to get anything off of the drive, and I could come pick it up tomorrow. What does that mean? I don't know yet. Meanwhile, my wife found this site while searching; Disk Recovery Software and Hard Drive Recovery tool for Windows. I'm downloading a demo version of their recovery software as we "speak". If it works, it'll be well worth the $50.00 registration fee. So as soon as I get the drive back, I'll try it. Wish me luck!

Sometimes you can fix the drive if the problem is a bad sector in the OS files area. I had this happen to me a couple of months ago. I would hear clicking sounds coming from the drive, then I'd get a Blue Screen of Death on WinXP, which I had never seen before. I was able to reboot for a while, but then finally the system wouldn't boot up anymore.

I was able to correct the problem by downloading the disk utilities from the drive manufacturer (Western Digital in my case), making a boot disc and using it to analyze and repair the bad sectors on the drive. I was very lucky and didn't lose any files.

Give this a try. You might get lucky like I did.

Since the crash, I installed a 500GB USB external drive ($99US) for backing stuff up, and I've been burning backup DVDs of critical files. The old drive has been working fine since then, but I don't trust it. I've just been too lazy to reinstall my entire OS and applications onto a new internal drive I bought.

By the way, the disk recovery places charge a fortune. They wanted ~$900 to recover the data on my drive. Depending on the data, it may be worth it to pay the price though.

Last ditch effort: Deep freeze the drive. Put it in a zip lock bag and put it in the freezer for 12+ hours. I have recovered data from 2 drives this way. Make sure you have a big enough drive to dump to because this is a one shot only. Once you shut the machine off again, you can't get it back up.

The drive is physically OK, and the protected partition area is OK, it's just that the rest of the data seems to be corrupted. I've been playing around with the R-Studio demo, but between the semi-functional nature of the computer I'm using now, and, not really knowing what I'm doing, this could take a while. I want to buy another HD (when I can afford it), copy the protected files to it, and use it to restore my other machine. Then maybe I'll be able to work with R-Studio properly.

Now THAT sounds like a plan! Hope it works!

Best of luck
