Paper to Plastic Klingon D-7

Here we go, another in the series of "Paper to Plastic" how to threads , on how to take your favorite paper models and turn them into fiberglass, resin, or plastic models! Whoot!

I'm going to start this off by going back to the original examples, before the model was crushed. I will however be starting a brand new model using the very same techniques.

There are two primary ways that I do this and often I use both methods to check the other. The first is to trace out parts from an existing model and resize to my favorite size and start working out the construction. The second is to actually scan the parts of the model and resize them in photoshop, print up templates and start working out the construction. There is a third way, which is how I started the Enterprise and that's to use available blueprints to create some of the parts and use a paper model, if one exists to work out some of the compound curves. Of course if there are no prints and there is no paper model, or existing *accurate* model to trace parts from, you have to go by what is available and work these things up yourself. This, it seems, it what a lot of guys do around here. Take what is available and work it up as best you can.

Preliminary assembly.

As you can see, the primary hull is almost an exact duplicate of the original only larger.

I've been concentrating on the TOS Enterprise and the ROM BOP as well as other things.

Got behind in real life stuff and had to give my house and wife some attention, not to mention the car and the truck..... it never ends.

Safety notice. Please follow the recommendations in this thread.Anyone know of any 'safe' alternative to expanding foam?

I never really experience much trouble with the expanding foam and used it mainly outside, or in a well ventilated area, but just to be on the safe side, please follow along with that thread. Also, there is no need to use to much foam and over do it, the foam will expand nicely.

There will be very soon! I'm going full speed ahead on this ASAP! I want to make sure that everyone can see how easy things can be and that they can do it themselves. I've just received one of the published Star Trek Paper Model books and will show some pictures. It's obvious from looking at this publication that well meaning fans can do a lot better job than the PRO-FESH-EE-ON-ALS when they put their mind to it. The paper models here are light years beyond this simple model.

Hmm, I have one question! What materials do you use for making the plastic touch? I know plastic is the obvious answer...but isn't there another material that easy to find?

You can get it at any WalMart, Home Depot, Auto Parts store, Boat and Motor facility, or online. I'll do another tutorial on the application and provide a list of links of Supplies, Services and Resources available to the modeler.

It's a simple process, but must be used in a well ventilated space. Like anything else it takes a little trial and error and a little work to get comfortable with. There's also Polyester resin, or Bondo which is also readily available.

Again, there are certain precautions that must be observed, but most of those are listed on the label. It really is a no brainer.
