Default Modelling tiny/thin accessories

Those tiny, thin objects that often appear on military and railway vehicles are quite annoying. What do you do with them? I often considered not modelling tiny/thin accessories and applying textures instead, but some of the models here happen to have those accessories printed on them.

On a tank, we have that fence for keeping stores, the little lamps, the machine guns, a few 3-D parts on the hatch and some hooks as well. A steam locomotive has those long railings or bars, some rings and who knows what else- the stoppers. Once again, the 'How to build tiny' thread comes to mind.

If you look through commercial models you'll find small parts are often modeled as flat bits and not 3D, this saves a lot of effort both for modelers and designers. This applies to everything including railings.
