Engine Terminal build

Well I want to write an article for my site but seeing as i can do it here incrementally then do it up in full later, I think this will be good.

The layout is actualy a small module for my future permanent layout. This is a module but not to any standard other then my own. So the size is 2'8" X 9'3"

The design is loosely based on the terminal in this months MRR design.

The benchwork came via a stack of skids put out by a neighboring business. Only the clean ones of course, it is a pool place so they were big skids. To make it easier to pull the nails I soaked the skids with the hose. That did the trick beeeautifully.

From the first to last pic here took 3 days.

Looks like sturdy benchwork! What are you using for the top?

PS, I also used mostly salvaged wood or wood I got for free.

Yeah i call it my scratchbuilt bench

Skid planking It has been glued and screwed. I intend to take advantage of the uneven surface to add realism. I have a whole load of shims from my career stairbuilding they will be perfect to build up the levels where i need them too.

The old boys will cringe I know this, but I have a knowledge of wood and its variables and am confident this will work out for a long time to come.

You may want to seal up the surface of the benchwork with latex paint prior to any ballasting/scenery just in case the wood decides it wants to swell or curl when it gets wet. After one bad experince with swelling subroadbed during ballasting, that's what I do.

Recycled wood for benchwork. I love it. I did almost the same thing too when building up my benchwork.

I am using grey primer from a can, do you think that is sufficient ?

A little farther then before. I had to stop as i need to finish a DPM modular so I can fit the tracks to it.

Working with a switch and animation machine. I am going to hook this baby up to both my coal tower and water tank in the future.

Well this is a DPM modular kit they are very kool kits. Advice read the instructions and and dry fit the pieces so you have time to realize all the pieces arent the same size. I have some masking to do to hide some of my mistakes.

looks like a great start ron!, the one shown in MRR was pretty sweet,im sureyours wil be just as cool

quick Q though,how easy are those DPM modulars to build? i think ill be using a few of there walls to build the late 1800's style brick forge shop for my steel mill .--josh

The modulars are awesome. Once you start it is very easy to see the variable that are possible. Just make sure to size up the pilasters correctly some of mine are wrong, but it didn't really effect things as I intend to muck it up good in the end.

Take a look a Drwaynes gallery, allot of those are modulars. You can see the different kits window styles.

Those modulars show a lot of potential for coming up with just the right configuration that's needed.
I thought you were going at this by yourself, though...I can see you're counting with some expert help..!!
