Greetings Real Space guys. I'd like some help on a project. There used to be a spherical map of mars online that was colored according to the various minerals that are present on the surface of Mars, it was also displayed in a way that made it look very buildable as a card model.
I'm wondering if there are spherical, or hemispherical models of the planets, or if there is some way to overlay a mesh onto an available model to get the size and planet you want. Any help is greatly appreciated in advance. Thanks. |

Couldn't you just attempt to create a primitive sphere in Meta, move a few points on the surface to create canyones, valleys, mountains, etc..And then lay a texture over it.

Mmmm.. interesting ~ A quick experiment. A 3D hemisphere with a 'radial' ( central focal point) texture applied and one with a 'flat' (side on ) texture applied.
The radial texture seems to make a 3D hemisphere look more natural when viewed at oblique angles.. where as, the flat textures looks better when viewed from directly above.. . |

Brilliant. This is one of the reasons I asked about this. i know you've got a project that might make use of this. Also, I can print up texture maps for the planets I make in PS, so there's no limit to the type, or number of planet configurations I can make. I think these would make great bases, or backgrounds for Real Science, or Sci-Fi models.

Hi All,
This is a seriously cool thread. Quick question ... How large (radius or diameter) is the model of Mars and the other planets on the link that Fructose posted? Have you used something like a foam ball to apply the printed card to? I didn't see it mentioned, and would like to forward this to my sister who's a teacher here in Texas.

i dont understand textures yet (on my "to-do" list) so i still use "low-fi" techniques.
i wanted to make a paper mache old style deep sea diving helmet.....ended up cutting it in half and making a lunar-lamp-shade instead. i painted the craters... |
