Default [Free Model #3] Pandora

I've been lurking here for some time, in fact for at least 2 years, always reading and learning new technics. I finally managed to get some free time from work, and decided that was time to show some work, and to try and give something to the comunity, and what better way than to join the contest.
My entry is the Pandora, from Gearz, you can get it here Sci Fi & PC Game paper card models. Pandora is the base airship for the Fortune Hunters gang, in the game Crimson skies, for more info: Crimson Skies - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
I love this game, i have the original version that came for the PC, and from time to time i still play it, so when Gearz (many thanks) created this model, i knew that i had to do it. The model seems fairly simple, but there are some parts that may be tricky, live the engine supports.

PS Gearz is working on Devastator, also from this game

Default An so it starts

Here are the first pictures, i was anxious to start with the pandora, so i decided to start the airship first, instead of the base. The fitting is excelent.
The model is printed in 180gsm paper

This is gonna look neat. If you don't mind answering a noobie question..What does "gsm" mean? Is that a measurement standard for paperweight?

gsm, or g/sqm stands for grams per square meter. A metric measurement of paper weight.

BTW, I have to say, I love your website!

I believe that i saw somewhere that 180gsm is 110lb, but i'm not sure.
Anyway here are some more pictures, i finished the main body of the airship, next stop the base

PS Please ignore the mess

Grams.... duh.... should've realized that. Thank you. And thankyou for looking at my online portfolio. I just finished some artwork for a childrens book and a couple of other things I'll be uploading to the site soon.

The dirigible is looking great! I know that it's tough keeping so many segments in a straight line. This is the kind of model that just screams to be hung from the ceiling! : )

Hey xadow ~ just in case i missed a first post/intro.. welcome to the forums (great place + great ppl)

Excellent job on the Pandora so far mate!! ~ I'm really looking forward to your build. ( i haven't seen a completed model yet) are you planning on using wire for the engine pods, or do you have something else in mind..?

+ good luck with the comp !!

Thanks Gearz, and yes this thread was my first .
I'm not sure but i will probably use card, as i'm not very good with wire , that will probably make the engine supports a little bit thick, but i can live with that.

Yeah.. I have to admit the wire suggestion was all I could come up with at the time of design, the parts were way to small for me to test. The struts will be partially hidden by the Engine pods, so card will probably be just as good as wire at that scale.

Looking good !

Speaking of wire, I tried that - works really nice, but it needs also a lot of work and I had some problems with getting the right diameter, that's why my build of the pandora is currently halted, sorry However, it looks promising

Hi Tars.. That's exactly what I'd envisioned with the wire suggestion. It may take a lot of extra effort but it looks great!. I'm not sure if they still use / produce it, however, some electrical fuse wire may be a ready source of fine wire. ?
love your antenna's !

xadow ~ Sorry for being pushy, any progress? Having any joy with the base.?

Your build is looking great Tars.
Unfortunately work has caught up with me,and I've been very busy, no rest for the wicked . ......but i did managed to get the base done
I've also been trying to build a engine support out of wire, just like yours Tars, but me and wire don't seem to get along, probably something to do with the fact that my hands don't stop shaking , it also makes modelling quite a challenge especially small parts.

And because

without further delay here are the pics:

Man, the hull looks reeally smooth! how did you do that? mine is all wavy and dented... hm! Still it definately makes me want to continue mine
I used some garden wire for those pieces, which is available plastic-coated or tinned. Maybe the tinned wire is better because of its silvery colour, but when I started I had only the other at hand so I'll probably continue with that.
Great base too, btw

Nice work on the base xadow,
I had bits of control tower stuck all over my fingers when trying to test it.
[ * must buy tweezers!]
