Gp15

I know by now this is old news to you more savvy N Scalers however,I was completely in the dark about this locomotive till I visited the Atlas N Scale forum.Shoot nothing at the N Scale club either!! Needless to say they know now.

Being a N Scale dabbler I can see 4 of these beauties replacing my GP9s. Well every profitable short line needs to upgrade their motive power fleet versus the cost of another rebuilt on locomotives that is 60 plus years old..That's my story(excuse?)and I am sticking to it.

Of course that will mean no new HO cars and cutting back to 2 RTR SW1500s instead of the planned four.

That means the street price should be between $49.00-55.00.


I suspect lower street prices once the first release "feeding frenzy" is over.

Sounds like they might be a good yard switcher instead of an MP15. BTW, sounds plausible for your replacement of the GP9s. Just sad to see them go.

I was even unaware that there was a GP15 from the EMD.
As far as I'm concerned, Canadien National jumped from the GP9 to the GP 38. I'm not even sure CN nor CP had some GP18 ( my 1st Life-Like MoPac great running N scale engine ).
I'll pass that one. My wife will be glad .Instead I'll get 3 news CN GP9s

The GP15 and GP15T came late to the party. EMD introduced it in the mid- to late-70's as an alternative to the GP7/9 rebuilding programs that were going on at the time. They weren't really popular, although MoPac and Conrail bought over 250 between them. The variants (GP15T, GP15AC) weren't all that popular either.

No GP18s were bought in Canada, although Grand Trunk had 8. The only really visible difference between the GP18 and GP9 is the radiator grids. GP7s and 9s have a "chickenwire" grill, while GP18's and later have a metal frame. Most people can't tell the difference, and so use GP18s as GP9s without losing any sleep.

I agree about the radiator grids, both GP9 and GP18 have the same number of grids at the same position I have both my N scale Atlas CPR GP9 and Life-Like Mopac GP18 to compare. BUT I see that the GP9 has 5 fans on the top ( 4 small and 1 medium sized one ) while the GP18 has only 2 big fans.
But don't worry, I'll sleep well tonight ( I keep alive the family tradition , started by my grandmother in Belgium, of having 1 beer before going to bed . This is a guaranteed good night sleep )

Unfortunately you can't use the fans as a spotting point, because some GP9s were delivered with the 48" fans, rather than the 36" fans that you have on yours.

Your grandmother was a wise woman. Was there a particular prescription she recommended? Chimay, perhaps?
